Diabetic Retinopathy and its stages:

Diabetes, the raging epidemic, is a metabolic disease which causes a person’s blood sugar levels to rise below normal. This could be majorly because of two reasons. Firstly, because the human body is no more capable of producing the required amount of insulin for the body and secondly because the cells in the blood develop resistance to the insulin, thus leading to high glucose levels in the blood.

Diabetes leads to several health problems like vomiting, abdominal pain, breathing problems, skin rashes, heart diseases and eye diseases. There are several eye diseases that diabetic patients suffer from. Some of the most common are: Diabetic Retinopathy, Cataract and Glaucoma.

Diabetic Retinopathy:

This is one of the most widespread eye diseases amongst diabetic patients and the foremost cause for blindness in Americans. Retina is a very light and sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. Changes in the blood vessels of the retina cause Diabetic Retinopathy. In some cases, the blood vessels of the retina swell and leak fluid, whereas in some cases new anomalous blood vessels grow on the surface of the retina. Patients suffering from diabetic retinopathy first observe changes in the vision; however, this can get worse at a later stage causing the person to loss his sight. This disease affects both the eyes. Hence, a good eye sight needs a healthy retina.

Stages in Diabetic Retinopathy:

There are primarily four stages in diabetic retinopathy, namely:

Mild Nonproliferative Retinopathy is the initial stage where small ballon like swelling appears in the blood vessels of retina, the second stage is Moderate Nonproliferative Retinopathy where the blood vessels that nourish the retina get blocked, Severe Nonproliferative Retinopathy, in this third stage more blood vessels are blocked depriving retina of its blood supply. Retina then sends signals to the body to develop some more blood vessels, finally Proliferative Retinopathy, the advanced stage, where new blood vessels grow due to the request sent by the retina. The walls of these vessels are thin and fragile and if they leak blood it can lead to severe vision loss or complete blindness.
